Mozart Reimagined – La Finta Semplice

27 Jul

Mozart Reimagined by Tyson Vick will feature numerous photos illustrating Mozart’s “La Finta Semplice”, which is a hilarious play set to music by a Mozart before his maturity. You can see a few sample images from this chapter below!

Mozart Reimagined showcases nearly 100 photos that bring to life Mozart’s operas through photography. I spent a decade building props and sets, meeting models and photographing across the country to showcase what Mozart’s music has meant to me. The book also features essays written about each opera from my own unique perspective. The book humorously points out plot-holes, gives insight into past and present performances, recites a little bit of History and overflows with my own passion for the music of Mozart.

Here’s an excerpt from the book which accompanies these images:

“The play has no aspirations to make any poignant or emotional declarations, or to leave a lasting philosophical impression on the audience. It is essentially Family Guy for the 1700s. Mozart was “imitating” or heavily influenced by the styles of other composers, rather than forging his own path. He takes his role extremely seriously, and sometimes it seems like the play wants to be a laugh riot and the score wants to be a serious musical piece. It is one of those cases where the young Mozart doesn’t know himself well enough to take the music where it needs to go…

That being said, the play is really funny. In particular, the author’s usage and intentional misusage of language is a real treat. Don Cassandro’s buffoonish and over inflated style of speech where he starts off headed one way and then quickly switches directions: “In this I am Orlando, and by that I mean I am nothing like him at all” or Don Polidoro’s romantic interests, “He falls in love if he sees as much as a cat wearing a bonnet” all have a distinctly whimsical wit. The words are funny.”

The photos feature the hilarious and spirited actress Nora Gustuson in the title photo. The photos also feature numerous professional musicians and the awesome self-help blogger/web designer Jason Lengstorf. Jason Lengstorf helped me out on these photos around six years ago. Shortly after, his life started filling with stress and he became overworked, working over 80 hrs a week, until he decided to make a huge life change. He now travels the globe, experiencing all of life has to offer and working out of coffee shops. He shares his journey from a life of stress and work to a life of fun and freedom on his blog, but more than that his advice is very helpful for any of you out there, who, like me and the lead hair/make-up lady on Mozart Reimagined, Lizzie, work too damn much. Check it out.

You can also check out the costumes and behind-the-scenes posts I made about the “La Finta Semplice” photos here and here.

I’m going to be giving you a preview of photos from every chapter of Mozart Reimagined over the next month, and then it will be time for pre-orders. I will be launching pre-orders on Kickstarter on September 14th, 2015! Until then, I wanted to give you a glimpse of some of the photos and excerpts from the book so you can see what’s in store! Subscribe to the blog for every update, or check back on September 14th for the launch of the book.
